Kid has been in usage since the late 16th century and since 1812 it was used to describe skilful young thieves and pugilists. by extension, anyone with an arrogant or cocky manner. Hence the humour in Han Solo saying to Luke Skywalker “Great kid, don’t get cocky…” applying it to someone with a bit of swagger is acceptable, especially if they look youthful. The idea that only young c___dren can be kids is an entirely erroneous assumption. the word applies to anyone owning their youth, and in an ironic sense, anyone at all.
